Brothers: Review

So, I'm just back from seeing Jim Sheridan's new war drama Brothers. Its got a solid turnout w/regards to its cast. Starring Jake gyllenhaal Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire. The story itself is relatively realistic, especially in modern america i would imagine.Maguire's character returns from war in afghanistan after being reported as dead. While he's gone Gyllenhaal steps in to take the male role in the family. Obviously this isn't commonplace but Maguire's reaction to the reality of war and his dealing with what he witnessed during his time in service is very believable. The film itself has a great script with regard to proportion and balance. In my opinion ,the switch from comedy to drama to romance fits like its all natural. There are some great performances to be seen in this picture. Portman and gyllenhaal give very strong performances as the wife and brother of Maguires character. Their reactions seem very realistic as anyone would to the situation they find themselves in. However, the standout performance to me was without a doubt Maguire. The best example of his performance can be seen in the penultimate scene of the film. In this scene he finally has a breakdown  after his return from war. His acting in this scene is top class and I now fully understand his nomination for the golden globes(which he sadly didn't win). But I am glad to see he got recognition for his playing of this character. Overall , Brothers is definitely worth seeing and I cant see how anyone wouldn't agree after seeing it.
